about this bathroom
This particular tile design appeals to many Bungalow owners for it’s quiet elegance and timelessness. It is hard to date this bathroom, as it lacks the trendy colors or novelty finishes found in most commercial flooring showrooms.
Because of its popularity, we will walk you through the design in case you were interested in trying it on your project…
Start with the floor…
This 3” hex tile is a softer alternative to the historic unglazed hex tile common to pre-depression homes. The satin white hex is bordered by a satin white 6” square tile with a satin black ½” x 6” accent strip in between. This black liner is balanced against another black accent liner midway up the wall.
...add the base…
The Victorian cove base has been installed on the top of the perimeter floor tile, where this robust molding serves to anchor the wall and impart a sense of substance to it. Alternatively, this cove can be installed flush where it would make a smooth transition from floor to wall. Be sure to discuss these options with your installer before they begin setting the tile.
…work up the wall…
A wainscot subway tile wall extends behind a classic console sink and toilet, and continues into the tub surround. The wainscot is capped by a simple 6x6 bullnose trim tile with a black accent strip below it. A more decorative Victorian cap molding could also be used in place of the bullnose, but many feel the simplicity of this design is in accordance with the Bungalow aesthetic.
… and around the tub.
The tub surround tile continues to the height of the wall and onto the ceiling. While the subway tile could have been used throughout this room, the addition of the 6” grid pattern compliments the subway tile pattern and adds interest to the design. The black liner is used here to separate the classic offset subway tile pattern below with the square grid pattern above. The diagonal pattern on the ceiling above the tub/shower introduces a third pattern, but it works well to define the space. The custom tiled niche serves its function without detracting from the tilework.
